Beyerskloof (South Africa) Pinotage 2001
Those of you following my profile of South Africa might just be in the mood to sample some of the wines. This is the Cape’s unique Pinotage grape made in a ripe, modern style. Pinotage is cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, and sometimes the best examples show glimpses of their parentage. This has a lovely ripe, bright, blackcurrant pastille fruit on the nose with creamy notes and a little briarwood hint. On the palate there’s a delicious sweetness to the fruit that suggests really ripe strawberries, or sweet damson plums, a soft, spicy underpinning and a smooth texture. There’s a really attractive dark, hint of gaminess and earth too, before freshening acidity wraps up a lovely, easy-drinking yet quite complex picture. Asda; Safeway, 5.99
