Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2010, South Africa
The Elgin Valley, on the coast east of Cape Town, is a truly cool climate area. The valley is still filled with apple and pear orchards, and the development of the wine industry has been a recent one as winemakers searched for cooler conditions in which to grow aromatic varieties like Riesling, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Iona is one of the best producers in Elgin, their Sauvgnon Blanc consistently showing fantastic intensity, but mineral purity and precision too. This has herbal and gooseberry punch and vivacity, but it has a great steeliness too, the palate showcasing plenty of sweet, ripe fruit, but all draped around a fabulous core of mouth-watering acidity. £10.99, Majestic and Waitrose.
