Cote Mas, Blanc Mediterranee 2012, France
The Paul Mas company under the dynamic leadership of Jean-Claude Mas has become a force to be reckoned with in the Languedoc region of southern France, with a presence for one of its many labels on UK wine shelves. Though there are excellent small producers in the region too of course, Mas does a very good job of making exemplary modern wines available to the UK mass market. This beautifully packaged and conceived new range of three wines, the white reviewed here plus a red and rose are really good examples: the white is zippy and fresh, with plenty of apple and lemon crunch from the Grenache and Vermentino, a touch of leafiness from Sauvignon Blanc and a little rounding out with Chardonnay. On the palate there’s a touch of spice, but plenty of immediate, punchy fruit sweetness, a rolling texture and a good core of acidity to give it balance.
