30/07/00 – Bethany (Australia) Grenache 1999

Bethany (Australia) Grenache 1999
I’ve been really quite impressed by the wines of Bethany in the past, their Riesling being a former Wine of the Week. This is 100% Grenache, a very widely planted grape in Australia, that is completely over-shadowed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. That’s a pity when the resulting wine is as nice as this. It has bright, focused, crunchily aromatic fruit on the nose with suggestions of pepper, mulled spices and sweet cassis, berries and a very ripe character. Medium to full-bodied, there’s a real creaminess to the texture and plenty of sweet, juicy berry fruit and a little tart red cherry note. Nicely balanced, this is a generous and appraochable wine that would be good with duck, wild mushrooms or lighter game dishes. UK stockist: Majestic 6.49
