Castello Banfi, Rosso di Montalcino 2007, Italy
Each year UK fine wine retailer Bibendum has a sale, with big reductions on a wide range of wines that always throw up some particularly interesting wines. The sale starts on February 2nd 2010, and will run until February 15th 2010 – or until stocks are exhausted. This Sangiovese from Castello Banfi is reduced from over £15 to £7.82 and at that price is a definite buy with its expressive tobacco and herbal edges to cherry fruit, and something a little bit earthy and gamy. On the palate it has crisp definition. A medium-bodied wine with savoury bite, it is drinking very well and will partner grilled meats or pasta with meaty sauces.
