Wine of the Week – 3/2/2013
I’ve already done my Valentine’s day bit with a recommendation for a fine a couple of weeks ago, but when this interesting and perfectly apt wine appeared I couldn’t resist a second recommendation. It’s a highly unusual frizzante (lightly sparkling) Malvasia from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, similar in style to a Moscato d’Asti from a little further north, with only 8% alcohol and a definite sweetness. The pretty floral label adds to the romantic Valentine’s Day appeal. There are floral notes on the nose too, but a great depth of peach and apricot fruit – deeper and more luscious than Moscato – with a gentle effervescent palate and plenty more of that sweet, tropical and peach juice fruity appeal, the sweetness nicely balanced by some crisp, sherbetty acidity.
