03/06/2012 – Dopff au Moulin, Alsace Pinot Blanc 2011

Dopff au Moulin, Alsace Pinot Blanc 2011, France
Several wines from Alsace have made it as wine of the week on wine-pages over the years, but almost always made from the Riesling or Gewurztraminer grape. The problem with Pinot Blanc is that it can tend to be rather short of personality, but here the family firm of Dopff au Moulin have done a nice job of making a fresh, fruity, fairly full-bodied but crisp wine in the style Alsace can do so well. Aromas of apple and melon fruit are made more subtly complex by nuances of spices and almond. On the palate this has weight and creamy texture, the flavours ripe and full but the citrus and apple acidity balancing and making this a fine food-matching all-rounder – and that’s where this wine excels.
