Pitchfork Margaret River Shiraz 2008, Australia
Margaret River is the best known appellation of Western Australia, the remote and relatively cool Australian region near the city of Perth and far from the vineyards of South Australia and Victoria. Shiraz is not a grape that is normally associated with Margaret River, but this wine from the Hayshed Hill estate has a lot going for it. It has very good fruit on the nose, an unoaked wine that still has a chocolate and spice depth, with plenty of black berries and a hint of cool climate pepper and gravel. On the palate there is plenty of savoury stuff going on: leather, tobacco, spice and black olive, but the blackberry fruit and juiciness of the acidity gives life and food-friendly appeal.
