Gran Familia, Sauvignon Blanc Verdejo 2011, Spain
Rueda in the northwest of Spain has recenty become a prime destination for fresh, zingy white wines mosty based around the local Verdejo grape. Its high altitude vineyards – sitting at around 700 metres above sea level – has proved ideal for conjuring aromatic, punchy wines that are often reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc. So this blend of Sauvignon with Verdejo makes perfect sense, and produces a wine with lots of gooseberry and elderflower notes, quite herbaceous, but a tropical fruit ripeness too. On the palate this toys with being off-dry, with so much sweet fruit too, making it very easy to drink, very crowd-pleasing, but with enough acidity to counter-balance. Not complex but well done.
