Yalumba, Y Series Vermentino 2011, Australia
Vermentino is a grape of southern Europe, from Italy and from the South of France where it is often known as ‘Rolle’. It makes a style of fresh, unoaked, breezy dry wine that is hitting the mood of the moment for many wine drinkers who find some Sauvignon Blanc just too pungent, and some other white grapes just too neutral. Like other currently popular grapes from Picpoul to Albarino, wines like this hit a spot somewhere in the middle. There’s a white flower note here that is fairly discreet, as well as some parsley-like herbs, oatmeal and plenty of punchy apple and lemon fruit. On the palate it is appetising and clean, with lots of citrus cut as well as more of that leafy green herb, some mouth-filling richness to the texture but a sharp, focused, food-friendly finish.
