Rioja may be Spain’s traditionally famous red wine region, but neighbouring Ribera del Duero has also soared to the top of the table, the wines made from the same grape, Tempranillo, though sometimes blended with one or more of the Bordeaux varieties. This is made from young vines with no oak ageing, so is all about the powerful, youthful and vibrant expression of the fruit. But it is not light or simple: it has earthiness and minerals, but huge, soaring summer berries and hints of tobacco and spice. In the mouth it is ripe, creamy and delicious, an ample, rounded wine with good but creamy tannins and a fleshy, sweet-fruited supple character.
