De Grendel, Winifred 2009, South Africa
In the week the World Cup in South Africa kicks off, it’s nice to have a wines from the host nation. This is an unusual blend of Viognier, Semillon and Chardonnay, and is a compelling wine that was fermented and aged in French oak, adding loads of character to the nose with buttery Brazil nut aromas over sweet nectarine fruit. On the palate it has ripeness and fullness, but not at the expense of precision as the juicy, butterscotch richness is tempered by firm acidity. Fabulous stuff. 9.99, Oddbins.
