Torres, Santa Digna Estelado Rosé Sparkling Wine NV, Chile
Champagne Canarde-Duchêne, Authentic Green NV, France
Nyetimber, Sparkling Wine Demi-Sec NV, England
It’s the 9th of December and many people will be buying sparkling wines to drink over the festive season. These three examples, priced from 12.49 to 35.00, are all very good in their own right, but they are also highly unusual and offer the chance of trying something a bit different. The first is a sparkling rose from Chile – in itself quite uncommon – but this is also made entirely from the rarely seen Pais grape, a Chilean speciality. The second is a Champagne, but one that comes from organically certified vineyards – a comparitive rarity in this region, and is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir. Finally, a new release from top English sparkling wine producer Nyetimber: it’s a Demi-Sec, or ‘half dry’ style with 45g/l or residual sugar giving it fabulous sippability, but some dessert-matching potential too. The full reviews and more details of all three wines are in the video, as well as food-matching suggestions. Santa Digna, £12.49 Soho Wine Supplies, The Vineyard, Alfred the Grape.
