(2018) Much more mealy and salty, immediately seems a little more serious with those leesy notes, more green to both colour and aroma too, giving a touch of figgy richness. So fresh on the palate, beautiful firm white fruit, more structured, more dense, but that saline tang and fresh, firm lemon acidity are delightful on the finish.
(2017) Made by Bodegas Gallegas in the Salnés zone of Rias Baixas on the extreme northwest of Atlantic Spain, this is a good, solid example that might not have attracted my attention but for the fact that is on offer at an almost giveaway £3.99 for two days in UK Lidl stores, 21st and 22nd October 2017. That embeds it even further into the 'useful everyday white' category. Fresh and fruity, it misses the mineral saltiness of the best examples, but the apple peel and citrus nose is joined by a hint of something floral. Dry on the palate (just 3g/l of residual sugar) it is balanced between the simple gluggy fruit and a good dollop of acidity. Watch the video for more information.
(2017) What a delicious take on Rias Baixas this is, with the unusual hint of oak from barrel ageing giving a sweet, rounding infill of cream and vanilla - not too much - to the racy, seaside-fresh fruit of classic Albariño. Broader in texture too, there's a nutty apple dryness and lick of salt and lemon pith in the juicy acidity of the finish. Undoubtedly a star of this special collection for me.
(2016) From Galicia in cool, Atlantic-influenced northwestern Spain, this is a bold red wine made from the local Sousón variety, AKA the Sousão of the Douro and Vinhão of red Vinho Verde. Deep and rich in colour, it has a black/blue fruit intensity, damson, blueberry and black plum, a touch of clove and a whisper of iodine and leather. Filling the mouth, it has plushness and depth, but there's a peppery, lean streak of acidity that can only be found in cooler climates, giving this freshness and a certain tartness and crunch that gives a wonderfully moreish, gastronomic character too. (2016) Adegas Gran Vinum is a family-owned company which produces the Esencia Divina Albariño, hand-harvested then made in stainless steel with some lees ageing. Pale in colour, the nose here is saline and fresh, touched with a little lime blossom and peach, but delicate. On the palate it is a bone-dry, grapefruit pith and lemony style that is well done, but it is an Albariño crying out for some shellfish perhaps. Stockist and price for the 2015 vintage.
(2016) Torre de Ermelo's Albariño is bottled in screwcap which makes perfect sense but which is actually quite unusual for this appellation. There's a leesy, lightly cotton-candy note to this, with ripe apple aromas and a touch of herby lift. Crisp in the mouth, that background nuttiness from the lees plays with the dry Cox's Pippin fruit and big lemon zest burst of acidity rather nicely.
(2016) Terra de Asorei is a cooperative cellar, and this is a handsomely packaged Albariño with a bit of leesy and citrus peel punch and immediate appeal, the floral aspects adding more delicacy. The palate display lovely orange and lime fruit, before a lemony, rather pithy, but undoubtedly fresh finish. Stockist and price quoted is for the 2015 vintage.
(2016) From the Val do Salnés sub-region, Eidos de Padriñán's Albariño comes in a no-nonsense Bordeaux-shaped bottle, and being a 2012 pours with a darker golden colour. There's a breadth to this, a fulsome peach and ripe apple fruitiness that fills the palate, though the lick of mineral salt to the acidity gives lovely definition. Drinking really well, savoury but still pin-sharp. Stockist and price quoted is for the 2014 vintage.
(2016) Bodegas Attis's rendition of Albariño has a natural character to the aromas, subtle and lightly earthy over some oatmeal and crisp orchard fruit. It's cool on the palate too, fairly understated with its citrus and crisp apple tones, but nicely textured, glimpses of sweeter nectarine on the mid-palate, and a nicely composed, quite long finish. (2016) There's a really pleasing herb and nettle touch to this wine, fermented with ambient yeasts, adding a little hint of wildness to lovely pert fruit and shimmering lemon fresh acidity. A clear and bright example of lovely quality.
