I’ve been looking forward to checking out Oxeye and it did not disappoint. Sven Hanson Britt has been planning this opening for a while apparently and the attention to detail shows. I’m sure some will find it a bit too thought out, a bit clinical maybe. From the snacks in the bar area through to the main event in the small dining room (17 covers being served on Saturday) it was pretty faultless. Very ambitious and I’m sure he’s eyeing up a star or two, which on this showing I would be surprised if he doesn’t achieve. The big disappointment for me was the wine list. Deliberately setting itself out to have a very wide selection of English/Welsh wine I think it leaves itself well short as a wine offering. They do offer some wines from elsewhere, but it’s a very small selection and not hugely interesting. We had a Sugrue Trouble with Dreams with snacks and then a brilliant Danbury Ridge Octagon Block Chardonnay from Essex (compares favourably to decent 1er Cru white burgundy imho) The reds I took along for £30 corkage. There really was nothing I wanted to drink. Some pics of the food:
