NYE supermarket champagne deals

At ASDA ...

No mention on the labels of a producer but in tiny print "emb 51056".

"If you’re looking to spend only around £10 a bottle, go for this:

Champagne Pierre Darceys Brut NV, France (£18, down to £10 until 31 December)

A genuine bargain on offer – fairly simple, but appealingly fruity with citrus and green apple and a light toasty note. "

A quick google reveals that Champagne Pierre Darceys is made by Co-op Paul Laurent at Bethon, full of Southern fruit. This co-op is not known for super-quality, and yet again I'm left head scratching as to why wine journalists are bottom feeding in such a way... the recent bargain binge for Champagne has revealed some excellent cuvees for not much more than this but with much superior quality.

If they want to promote an inexpensive 'easy drinking' type fizz then plenty of better options from Marne I'd imagine. Not the fine bone china - but then presumably they're targeting the Prosecco market who are used to a bit of sweetness - in which case something with a good dollop of Marne Meunier I'd have thought a better option than a lot of the more southern stuff? ... that said there are interesting growers in the south - quite like some of the Gallimard wines for instance - nothing like a lot of Champagne granted.

Well I just took a chance on this Asda £10 plonk. Need something to take round to my prosecco-mad sister-in-law this afternoon and hoping it will provide a happy medium that we'll both get some enjoyment from without having to open one of my very few finer bottles.

Only just survived Asda Arnold though. Horrific place.

FWIW, just drank the Darceys with family and would describe it as good at this price/reasonable in general. Medium mousse in terms of persistence and bubbles, citrus and sour apples; refreshing and gluggable but unremarkable. Toasty note is pushing it for me though. Still, much nicer than some of the unpleasant Prosecco and Cava I've supped this holiday season.
