(2021) This Marlborough wine is made by the traditional method, and is 100% Pinot Noir bottled with a dosage of 9.8g/l after 18 months on the lees.  It is light and frothy and very much focused on red berries, with strawberry and raspberry, a touch of lemony character adding some edge. In the mouth it is also brightly focused, but the mousse adds some texture and richness before very good acidity offsets the dosage and naturally sweet fruit character into the finish.
(2021) 2020 is shaping up to be a great vintage in the Marlborough region, especially for Sauvingon Blanc, where some winemakers I have spoken to rate it as one of the best harvests of recent times. This is also the best Sauvignon Blanc I have tasted from Allan Scott, and one of the most perfumed and aromatic too. Loads of vivid, scented talcumy tropical fruit leaps from the glass, passion fruit and mango and lychee, florals too with so much fragrance. The palate bursts with similar exotic fruit, nicely pitched acidity, juicy concentrated fruit and great balance into a long finish. £9.99 from N.D. John at time of review. (2021) Crisp and gently aromatic, their fresh sliced pear, a touch of herby grassiness and a little melon rind note. The palate is vivid and lemony, a bit of texture and grip from lees ageing I'd guess, but balanced and concentrated into the finish.
(2021) I think it's fair to say that rose Rioja would once have been much deeper in colour, but like so many others this follows the Provencal path, pale and peachy pink, a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Tempranillo. There's a light yeastiness and creaminess over quite understated, lemony aromas. On the palate there is ripe, sweet fruit, as much about melon and citrus as red fruits, the 14% alcohol quite noticeable, but a bright finish a there is good fruit here.
(2021) 100% Malbec from the Agrelo region of Mendoza, this was matured in French and American oak for 4 months. Bright, dark crimson-purple colour, with a nicely lifted nose, some florals and ripe cherry, a little wisp of smokiness. In the mouth there's a coolness about this, a lithe feeling through the medium body and crunch of the acidity married to smooth and creamy fruit. A bite of liquorice or endive bittersweetness along with pert acidity and fine, linear tannins gives this a bit of bounce and energy on the finish too.
(2021) Alan Scott is a sizeable producer of quality commercial wines, with vineyards neighbouring Cloudy Bay in Marlborough. This has an obvious degree of residual sugar sweetness, which is common with Pinot Gris, both from Marlborough and the original model for such wines, Alsace. It is rich in aroma, flavour and texture, the character quite tropical, with orange peel and juicy citrus playing against that sweetness and medium- to full-bodied, mouth-filling weight. Versatile for sipping on its own or with some foods, watch the video for more information and food-matching suggestions.
