Following news of the desperately untimely death of the actor Paul Ritter a few days ago, I've gone back to binge on the C4 sitcom Friday Night Dinner from the beginning. What's clear from his very first entrance in the first episode is that his Martin Goodman is one of the very greatest humane comic creations, a figure of a kind of centripetal anarchy, all done with virtuoso economy of gesture, so compelling to watch, and uplifting too in the face of the void.

He was an actor of enormous range too, viz. his terrifying turn as the negligent supervisor Dyatlov in Chernobyl and many other memorable roles.

I missed FND and will give it a try. He was certainly outstanding and absolutely compelling as Dyatlov in Chernobyl, as were so many others.

FND - I was introduced to this via my 2 boys - love it and now "Shit on it" is (much to my wife's horror) a regular phrase coming from my lips.

Looking at his other work, he really was an incredible actor. Cherynobl he was very intense.

Looking back at Chernobyl, he dominated every scene he was in just by his demeanour. Brilliant acting.

I heard this morning of the death of Michael K. Williams, another one gone far too young.

I do believe posterity will record his creation of Omar in The Wire as one of the greatest contributions to TV ever. It was a full-fronted yet economical performance in which he seemed varioulsly to enact every American archetype - Stagger Lee, lover, actor, detective, lone ranger, executioner, Spiderman - perhaps even America itself. In a way that seems to instantly render other portrayals obsolete. Above all, extremely funny, viz the courtroom scene in series 1 and the scene I first thought to rewatch in tribute - where he goes out to buy cereal and clears the streets of Baltimore, armed with nothing more than a terrifying pair of teal pyjamas

Just clicked on that and saw Jonathan Meades introing it - I love Meades and thought this was a series of his i'd missed but not quite.
None the less i'll check it out - thank you!

Love a bit of Meades - get your dictionary out!! But, yes, Nairn across Britain is a masterpiece. Good remembering there @Thom Blach

Just started watching Vigil on BBC - drama based on nucleur sub. Very good - excellent cast

Also finished series 2 of Back to Life which I think is a superb dark comedy.
